Concept

The Insularium is a platform for people who are fascinated by island worlds, want to get to know or travel to islands or are interested in islands for other reasons. The aim of the project is to create a source of information and a virtual forum, but also special travel opportunities for island visitors and real meeting places for island lovers.

The Insularium is intended to include the following sections:

  • The ‘Great Insularium‘, an island encyclopedia accessible via www.insularium.org, which offers basic information as well as a summary of the digitally and analogously accessible knowledge on individual islands. The material presented in English, German and the respective national language is to be scientifically clarified and substantiated. The people and/or institutions that actually look after or administer the individual islands are to be involved in the compilation, as are scientists from various fields. In order to meet scientific criteria and enable a concrete exchange of knowledge, sources and authors should be named.
  • The ‘Island Forum’, which complements this encyclopaedia and aims to exchange information and knowledge on individual islands, but also on certain overarching topics. In this sense, critical discussions are to be conducted and current additions introduced.
  • The ‘Island Travel Agency’, which co-operatively offers specially created island travel packages off the beaten track in addition to standard tours. The aim is to network interested parties and providers, especially small providers. Carpooling opportunities on motorboats and sailing ships are to be advertised as well as larger excursion boat trips and other island visit options. Travel options for individual islands are listed in the ‘large Insularium’ under the keyword ‘travel offers’ at the end of the respective chapters.
  • The ‘Book Island for Island Books’, a real-life meeting place that offers a library and café with the opportunity for private study as well as personal information exchange. The aim is to initiate several of these meeting places.

Co-operation is expressly desired. As access to the information should be free, the project is dependent on donations and advertising revenue.
